Nikon S570 Review
Good photos, great scene features and an amazing price help the Nikon S570 impress
The Nikon S570 is Nikon's entry in the Coolpix line-up that sits at the attractive $199 price point. As a digital camera that appeals to the casual consumers, the Nikon S570 is simple yet well built and offers the standard features for the market.
These ease of use features of the camera are one of its strongest points and one of the places that the Nikon S570 really delivers. The controls are intuitive and quick to figure out, and the scene options are helped with Nikon's automatic scene selector. However, the biggest entry in this realm is the introduction of the Smart Portrait System in the Nikon S570. This mode includes red eye fix, face focusing, blink warnings and a smile shutter which causes the camera to take a photo once it detects the users. All of these features make the camera great for point and shoot users who take many people photos.
Despite the digital camera's ease of use, it does have some short comings with respect to living up to its promises. The Nikon S570 states that it has VR Image Stabilization. While this is true, it is a purely electronic technique that manipulates your iso settings and shutter speed and is not really an optical or mechanical enhancement to truly help stabilize your shots.
In a similar sense of overpromising, the Nikon S570 allows you to shoot up to ISO 3,200. However, both the ISO 3,200 and ISO 1,600 options on the Coolpix S570 leave a lot to be desired. You can see a lot of color shifting and yellow blotching in these regions, making it fairly limited with these options.
Despite that, the Nikon S570 takes good pictures. It functions well up to ISO 800, and takes nice bright photos. The lens is high quality and outputs solid photos.
Overall, for a casual point and click digital camera user in the $200 price range, the Nikon S570 delivers a good photo.
